Modeling an inclusive future:

Customizing clothing for all

What makes someone singular goes beyond their dimensions. In the Fall of 2022 we collaborated with Collina Strada’s creative director Hillary Taymour to explore the possibilities of “custom” clothing. Ultimately, we sought a way to make a garment that could realize the full individuality of the person donning it, in body and in spirit.

Combining unspun’s custom-fit patternmaking with Taymour’s customized design, we ideated a one of a kind jean that would wear as well as it dazzled. The runway models with whom we worked for Fashion Week were the first to try it out.

Diverse in physique and age, each model took a body scan on the unspun app. That scan generated a 3D digital representation of their figure. At that point, like dressing an avatar, our fit algorithms assembled a bespoke pattern on that representation. Our algorithms then rendered the pattern as 2D panels, which our partner factory cut and sewed. Once finished, Taymour enlivened the models’ jeans in her signature style, using watercolor, rhinestones, and accessories to transform the appearance of each pair into a singular personal statement.

This broad application of “custom” informed the design of our limited edition Butterfly Jeans. Each pair is made according to the dimensions of the person who will wear it, and every pair features a rhinestone butterfly motif to display that person’s freewheeling attitude while wearing it. Made-to-order style, made for anyone.

Collina Strada

As much a mode of expression as it is mode, Collina Strada embodies an ethos of self-love. Known for working with models historically excluded from the runway, the brand creates eye-catching garments in riotous assemblages of color as a means for a person to exuberantly declare their personality. The way it creates those garments is just as conscientious. Primarily producing small batch collections with recycled fabrics, deadstock fabrics, and upcycled old clothing, Collina Strada reuses textile waste that would otherwise pollute lands and waterways, most often in the global South. What’s good for the person is good for the planet; the social and environmental are inseparable.

What our partnership shows

Custom-fit clothes are desirable in the marketplace

Sizes vary across brands and time, and so often fail to accommodate all body types that they discourage customer interaction, restricting possible markets. In contrast, the option of custom-fit clothing encourages all persons to regularly shop with the brand offering it, for the reason that creating a garment for the person who will wear it provides a better-fitting product than one that is sized.
